Roscommon solar farm gets go ahead despite opposition

Planning permission has been granted for a €6 million solar farm to be developed in Roscommon.

Despite strong objections from residents, Roscommon County Council has given the go-ahead for the large renewable-energy facility to be built at Creevyquinn.

In January, Gaelectric Renewable Energy Developments sought planning permission to build a solar farm on a 34-acre site at Creevyquinn, near Roscommon town.

It would provide power to about 1,000 homes, but 15 residents opposed it.

In lengthy submissions, they raised environmental, traffic and health concerns.

They also claimed the price of houses in the area could be devalued by the development.

However, Roscommon County Council has granted permission for the solar farm, subject to a number of conditions, which haven’t been finalised yet.

Michael Donnelly, Gaelectric’s development manager, welcomes the decision and reveals construction will begin next year.
